The Story of Rules
Throughout history, Rules has seen the reigns of nine monarchs, but changed hands only three times, with its legacy carefully preserved.
In 1798, Thomas Rule, the founder of Rules, began his journey into the world of oysters at Maiden Lane. During these times, only one person per building was a ratepayer, and the bustling Census of 1841 revealed that as many as three separate households, totalling 30 individuals, were part of the Maiden Lane community.
Just before World War I, Charles Rule, a descendant of the founder, considered a move to Paris, and by sheer coincidence, crossed paths with Tom Bell, owner of the Parisian restaurant, Alhambra, leading to an unexpected yet transformative business exchange.

During World War II, Rules remained open offering essential rationed meals at five shillings while still indulging patrons with the likes of rabbits, grouse, and pheasants.
In 1984, the daughter of Tom Bell sold Rules to John Mayhew, who shouldered the role of stewardship. Today, Rules is owned by Ricky McMenemy who has worked at the restaurant for 35 years. It accommodates around 90 guests and employs a dedicated staff of 90, ensuring its storied legacy continues.
